OK, let’s talk about Day 2 of the Combine...the TEs and CBs.
Shocker: More record setting individual and group performances. There would probably be massive records set as a group if they all participated but like (example) among the TEs -- 1/3rd of the invited players skipped getting timed for various reasons.
Here are some of my notes in no particular order...
-- Kenyon Sadiq and Eli Stowers, our current/pre-Combine #1 and #3 TE prospects, stole the show so to speak. Sadiq with a record setting (among TEs) 4.39 40-time and Stowers with a bonkers 45.5” vertical, and good everything else as well.
Just purely judging Combine results, it was Sadiq as the #1/winner ‘best in show’ and Stowers #2.
Our #2 ranked TE (pre-Combine), Justin Joly, did not do drills...which scares me a bit because if he knew the big dogs were going (Sadiq and Stowers) then Joly should’ve gotten after it. We have to assume he is hiding something or is being overcautious. Some guys should skip this event...a guy like Joly could’ve gotten on the draft map more with it...but skipping it means he was afraid of bad numbers being realized...or maybe it was so good he feels he has the right to skip this?
I suspect Stowers will rise over Joly on our next TE grade update.
-- OK, if Sadiq was #1 and Stowers #2 in the Combine (only) judgement...who was the 3rd/the bronze medal TE?
There were so many solid performances at TE. Strictly on Combine, not taking anything else into consideration, my #3 would go to: SMU’s Matthew Hibner...6’4”/251 and ran a 4.57 and a 1.56 10-yard with a 37.5” vertical.
-- Houston TE Tanner Kozoil was probably the biggest let down among the TEs...a 4.71 40-time gets lost when most of the TEs ran in the 4.5s and 4.6s. Kozoil’s 4.71 was the 4th slowest time in the group running.
-- Man, the Styles family has crazy athletic genes. Sonny’s brother Lorenzo ran a 4.28 40-time...he’s a 6’0/194 safety.
-- Caleb Downs smartly skipped everything. He has no reason to participate. He cannot help his lofty draft stock; he can only hurt it.
-- The CBs that stood out the most (strictly judging Combine tresults)...
#1/Gold = Washington CB Tacario Davis...6’4”/194...80 7/8ths wingspan and ran a 4.41 with a 37” vertical at that 6’4” level. A lot of le nth + athleticism there.
#2/Silver = Houston CB Latrell McCutcheon...6’2”/191 running a solid 4.44 but of the rare few who did the three-cone, he was the best at 7.00.
#3/Bronze = Stephen F. Austin CB Charles Demmings...6’1”/193...ran a 4.41 with a 42” vertical and 11’0” broad.
-- The SAFs that stood out the most (strictly judging Combine results)...
#1/Gold = Ohio State’s Lorenzo Styles with a 4.28 at 6’0”/194...and a 1.49 10-yard split with a 39” vertical.
#2/Silver = Georgia’s Genesis Smith at 6’2”/202...skipped the 40-time but popped a 42.5” vertical and the best shuttle time of the SAFs at 4.18.
#3/Bronze = Oklahoma’s Robert Spears-Jennings...6’2”/205 with a 4.32 40-time
-- 14 safeties ran 40-times...none were over 4.60...the worst was 4.56. This is insane how good the athletes are getting every class.
Tomorrow we’ll look at Saturday’s QB-RB-WR group.
