We’re looking at all NFL team’s free agent moves (in and out) and their NFL Draft to see who got better and by how much -- setting the tone for analyzing them for the upcoming season for FF purposes and for betting evaluations on team over/unders, etc.

We had Grok list all the moves and we show them first and then Ross and I (RC) weigh in on what we see with all the roster moves -- how they affect 2025 only. And ultimately we pick a winner.

We’ll do two matchups per day, within each division seeded from the 2024 final standings, for 16 days...then we’ll take the 16 winners and accelerate the matchups after that and advance the best ‘offseason’ moves teams through to the ‘Super Bowl’, declaring a final winner.

Ross Jacobs’ analysis...

San Francisco 49ers Off-season Grade: D-

I knew it was bad, but seeing all the losses together on paper...SF got gutted. I've never seen so many impactful losses for one team in a single year. They lost 5 starters on defense, 2 starters on offense, a great swing tackle, and maybe the best backup RB in the league. Free agency didn't provide any relief as the team had no money to pay anyone while they slashed costs in anticipation of Purdy's coming contract.

The draft wasn't as bad as I first thought. I do see the potential with Mykel Williams. I won't slam the door shut on him just yet, although I'm not a fan currently. CJ West was one of my favorite later round defensive tackles prospects, Nick Martin was very underrated by the media, and Marques Sigle could turn into a good safety down the line.

The team clearly was hyper focused on getting run-stoppers in the front seven. It could have been worse. But there's no way this class instantly makes up for all the free agency losses either. An "F" grade is certainly possible (and I imagine RC is going to hand it out), but I do want to acknowledge the potential of some of their draft picks as well. Either way the scope of their losses is immense, and I think it's safe to say the 49ers had the single worst off-season in the league from a pure talent loss/gained perspective.

Los Angeles Rams Off-season Grade: D

The Rams shuffled around a few pieces, but I don't see that much changed in free agency. The biggest moves were moving on from Cooper Kupp and replacing him with Davante Adams. Is that as big a deal as the media is making it? Was Kupp really washed? Does Davante still have "it"? I'm not convinced. I don't get their draft either. I was hoping for another really nice class to push them over the edge to ‘obvious favorite’ in the NFC West, but they didn't do it...coincidently right after James Gladstone left to run the Jaguars and knocked their draft out of the park...The only pick I really like is Josaiah Stewart. He's undersized but smart, strong, tough, and productive.

Winner: Los Angeles Rams

The Rams win this completely by default as the 49ers had inarguably the worst off-season of any team. But they certainly didn't earn the win either. I'd easily rank the Rams with one of the worst 3-5 off-seasons right behind SF. The two powers in the West just opened the door for the Cardinals and Seahawks to make a move in the division.

RC’s analysis...

San Francisco offseason comments:

I understand that the 49ers are wanting to rebuild themselves, but they went extreme in gutting a lot of the core of their team...which is fine if they then backfilled with a bunch of talent as well. But looking at it -- I’m left scratching my head on the execution of the plan, a plan...any semblance of a plan.

They lost 8-9 legit starters and 2-3 other useful backups by letting them go or trading them (Deebo)...and in their place, via free agency, they signed...??? Mac Jones? Demarcus Robinson? They lost 8-9 starters during the free agency period and signed back zero legit starters.

OK, maybe they’re just gonna really go-for-it to backfill through their 11 draft picks. Nope, not really. I see 1-2 hopefuls but mostly see guys I thought were vastly overrated at their position group. I have no idea why the 49ers committed, quoting System of a Down, a self-righteous suicide...but it looks like that’s exactly what they did.

LA Rams offseason comments:

The runway was totally clear for the Rams to have a killer offseason and put this division away before it even started, but the ‘James Gladstone is gone’ effect hit hard here. For the first time in a few years, the Rams whiffed in free agency and the draft.

The good news is...they didn’t really lose a ton in free agency, not like SF (but no team lost in FA like SF). Losing Jonah Jackson stings a bit. Michael Hoecht was nice but not critical. Riff-raff lost otherwise. Landing Davante Adams is fine, and snagging Poona Ford was a sleeper crafty move -- but overall the Rams were neutral or maybe slid a tad backwards via free agency/trade.

Did they make it up in the draft? No, not really. This draft looks kinda empty. A huge opportunity blown for any 2025 impact guys. Nothing like last year’s killer draft.

RC’s WINNER: LA Rams

The Rams offseason was bad...the 49ers was worse, epically worse. Arguably the worst offseason that I’ve ever seen, just judging current year win/loss impacts.

*Officially Moving on in the Tournament* The LA Rams move on to the NFC West finals to face Arizona.
