Add Intro: Now, more featuring my (RC) news and notes from the day's/week's discussions and/or studies...

Old Intro: Whenever I come across any football news reports/articles in my research or sent to me by FFMers that I think are interesting or back up/contradict/debate things I've discussed, I'd like to share them for extra/interesting reading material...and have them put into the archives so if you you are researching things about a player or situation, you can search it on the FFM site and it's part of the arsenal for your research.

It will be mostly reports on players/situations not as discussed nationally (but could be from national/big media sites), but are (hopefully) relevant to Dynasty/Fantasy/Handicapping purposes as we go...with the occasional item that I just thought was interesting in general about anything football related.

Here's what I have for this day (noting the players/situation discussed for future archive search purposes with a link to the article):

-- De’Andre Johnson from the USFL to HOU or CLE…

‘The other’ (non-McGough) QB trying out for an NFL camp look, but he’s not near the QB that Alex McGough is…but he is 5x the wild story…

Johnson was an initial Florida State commit…and in his freshman season he was kicked off the team for punching a woman during an argument. He then went to East Mississippi (Last Chance U) and had a nice season and parlayed that to a transfer to Florida Atlantic. After one game there, he was hospitalized after that game, diagnosed with blood clots in his arm and redshirted from there. He later transferred to Texas Southern where he had a so-so run.

He went undrafted in the NFL and played some in the Spring League in 2020 -- but was a 12th-round selection in the USFL in 2022. He is a run package option at QB…not a great thrower, but a pretty decent runner with 4.4+ speed. He has a decent arm but his accuracy, etc., is not great.

He’s likely not going to make it past a possible/long-shot practice squad worker.

The Browns and Texans seem to be the most interested, per reports.

Here's a glimpse of his work...he's a big boy moving that fast. Maybe he'll get a look at WR? Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DGXIG5ruP6Q

-- Alex McGough from USFL to the Green Bay Packers…

Who is Alex McGough?

2018 7th-round pick for Seattle out of Florida International…he made some plays in his preseason time with Seattle…he caught my eye a little back then and I kept tabs on him, but he never made it further than the practice squad or deep backup.

McGough was the 2022 season USFL MVP and led his team to the title game victory.

McGough has a strong arm…that has gotten stronger as he’s aged/improved. He can run a little bit too…a 4.6+ runner at his Pro Day, and was 6’3”+/215 as a rookie but looks like he’s a solid 220 pound range now with decent wheels and a whip arm. He’s got a little something. He’s probably better than at least a-third of the NFL backup QBs today.

McGough just signed with Green Bay…and I think that is telling. I think it signals an unease with Jordan Love…and then an unease with only having a later-round pick rookie (Sean Clifford) as the fail-safe plan. I would argue, McGough is probably better than all of them right at this moment. Maybe Love is going to surprise, but McGough has actually played more serious ball than Love has the past 2-3 years…and Love is very shaky/questionable.

I would not be surprised at all if McGough were starting at some point for the Packers this season, and that McGough might not make the best of that chance and make a little noise. We’ll see how he looks in the preseason games to push on that more…or run from it.
