2022 Week 3: Bengals 27, Jets 12 (Dynasty/Fantasy Analysis Game Report)

This went about the exact way everyone expected (a rarity in the NFL, especially Week 3).

The (0-2) Bengals needing a win, jumped on the weaker (1-1) Jets and just held them down all game. There was never any real threat to the Bengals in this one…just a typical Jets game -- fall behind early and throw 100 passes in a half-hearted comeback effort.

The Bengals are not ‘cured’ with this first win. There’s still more we all need to see.

The Jets are not good, period.

Not much at all happened here of great FF-revelation, but I do have some quick hitter notes to share.

Fantasy Player Notes…

-- The most obvious thing from this re-watch…wherever Sauce Gardner was, Joe Burrow was very likely NOT throwing there. The word is already out in the league…a no-fly zone is Gardner.

When Gardner focused on/covered Ja’Marr Chase (6-29-1/10), he shut him off. When Gardner wasn’t right on Chase…that’s when Chase got some basic catches.

Tee Higgins (5-93-0/7), however, didn’t have much issue with Gardner…Tee burned him with routes/cuts a few times, but they didn’t face each other that much either.

-- Tyler Conklin (8-84-0/8) had a ton of catches and yards, but it didn’t seem that way just watching the game. I don’t think he got his first target until mid-2nd-quarter and then he got a bunch of ‘everyone goes deep against prevent, but the TE leaks out and is the easy throw for the QB to move the ball safely’ throws.

It’s working because the Jets find themselves in that situation every game, but there’s no major event happening here besides ‘lots of passes in garbage time’ for Conklin…and the whole team.

Hayden Hurst (1-7-0/2) on the other hand…his one and only target was in the mid-4th-quarter. He looked good the prior week but was a ghost here.

-- Garrett Wilson (6-60-0/11)…lots of targets…doesn’t look special, but looks fine…about everyone but Elijah Moore (4-49-0/11) is benefitting from the elevated targets each week.

-- Joe Mixon (12-24-0, 3-14-0/7) got banged up and Samaje Perine (9-47-0, 2-14-1/2) cleaned up at the end. This is still Mixon’s backfield but his string of regular season games under 4.0 yards per carry in each game has now reached 8…with a robust 2.8 ypc in the 2022 season. I blame the O-Line more, but whatever it is -- Mixon has been terrible for FF. It won’t be easy vs. MIA this week.

NEVER.

AGAIN.

With 1st-round redraft RBs.

-- Speaking of boring RBs, Breece Hall (8-39-0, 6-53-0/11) is the backup RB to Michael Carter (11-39-0, 1-7-0/2). Both guys have the same issue…

The Jets stink, so they’re always down and turning to a lot of dink & dunk passing against prevent defenses, trying to move the ball.

There is no run game chance in early and often deficits…and the O-Line is bad anyway. So, it’s just a bunch of dump passes…and Breece gets a good share, but he is dropping several too. He just doesn’t look comfortable in an NFL passing game. He looks better running the ball.

Neither has much of an FF chance outside of big dump pass days in PPR.

-- Joe Burrow (23-36 for 275 yards, 3 TDs/0 INT) wasn’t hit as much here or pressured like he had been the first two weeks…so, of course, Joey B. just shredded the defense with ease.

Two or more TD passes in four of his last 5 regular season games, averaging 2.8 passing TDs per game in that stretch. He’s fine…great with normal pressure and not a sack fest.

-- We are supposed to see Zach Wilson Week 4 for the Jets. It won’t make much difference to the wins-losses. When last seen playing, Wilson was doing his same old ‘press the issue’ throwing, throwing into danger too much. If he can ever get himself under control and find the balance of taking shots and taking the easy throw, he could be a real QB. Until I see him doing that, all I can do is bet against him. But a real QB talent lies within, I’ve seen at BYU…just not sure if/when it can be unlocked.
