2022 Mock Five Round Dynasty Rookie Draft (from the #9 spot)
Just to get a few practice sessions in/looks in for May 2022 DRD concepts. Using the FantasyPros rookie draft tool, which isn’t great but is useful for this exercise…and reflects a good amount of the mainstream thinking. We can argue their ADPs, etc., but they’re close/within a margin of error on their top 30-40-50…close enough.
The rules are – I HAVE TO make the pick. In reality, I want to trade out of 1.02 to 1.12 to fade back to the #16-20 range and get a ____ for my fallback trouble, or that concept within an even bigger deal. My 1st + a player for their 2nd and a bigger player. I don’t want to pick in the first round, if I can help it…but in case you have to, here’s some ways I’ll go about it and you can decide your own plans or adopt some of my advice…
Starting at 1.12 and going backwards to 1.01, since most FFMers finished #1-2-3 range last season. ;)
1.1 Breece Hall
1.2 Drake London
1.3 Ken Walker III
1.4 Treylon Burks
1.5 Garrett Wilson
1.6 Jameson Williams
1.7 Chris Olave
1.8 Isaiah Spiller
1.9 Skyy Moore = I will continue to be annoying and start out saying…you should trade this pick for a #16-18 range overall pick and ____ asset to go-with for falling back (or some version of that trade concept of fading this 1st-round).
But we’re making the picks here for the exercise of it, so...I was going to go with my standard Dameon Pierce pick here, but I deviated a bit. I took Skyy because I feel the heat on him right now – people love the name (literally and figuratively). I took Skyy from a mindset that I have a title contending team, and now I’m going to trade Skyy by the end of the week or so for a real player/s.
If you have Fournette or Ekeler and want to take Rachaad or Spiller here…it’s smart. If you have Singletary and want to add James Cook…ehhhh, OK/not crazy. But that’s all if you’re making the picks. You should be trading this pick for other assets in most cases.
1.10 Dameon Pierce
1.11 Jahan Dotson
1.12 Christian Watson
-----------------------------------
2.1 James Cook
2.2 George Pickens
2.3 Rachaad White
2.4 David Bell
2.5 Kenny Pickett
2.6 Trey McBride
2.7 John Metchie III
2.8 Malik Willis
2.9 Tyler Allgeier = We’re in the stage where I’m kinda forced to take Allgeier (which I want to do) first, and then hope Jelani Woods is there with my 3rd-round pick. In a perfect world, I go Allgeier-Woods 2nd-3rd, but you should try to maneuver into two 2nd-round picks…using your 1st and/or 3rd picks as bait, as needed, to get into position for the Allgeier-Woods daily double pick from this draft.
If existing players like Allen Lazard are available in this draft…then having three 2nd-round picks is a fine idea…or a 2nd and two early 3rds, etc. This is a draft for having a good amount of 2nd and 3rd and 4th-round picks if there are some decent existing NFL players available in your DRD.
2.10 Zamir White
2.11 Alec Pierce
2.12 Wan'Dale Robinson
-----------------------------------
3.1 Jalen Tolbert
3.2 Hassan Haskins
3.3 Brian Robinson Jr.
3.4 Jelani Woods (not even close to falling to me)
3.5 Tyrion Davis-Price
3.6 Greg Dulcich
3.7 Desmond Ridder
3.8 Justyn Ross
3.9 Kyle Phillips = For sure Allen Lazard here, instead of Phillips…and I do love Phillips but Lazard likely to impact much more in 2022.
Bryan Edwards, Marcus Mariota, Curtis Samuel are all names to consider here too.
3.10 Khalil Shakir
3.11 Jerome Ford
3.12 Matt Corral
-----------------------------------
4.1 Keaontay Ingram
4.2 Calvin Austin III
4.3 Tyler Badie
4.4 Tyquan Thornton
4.5 Kyren Williams
4.6 Cade Otton
4.7 Sam Howell
4.8 Jalen Wydermyer
4.9 Isaih Pacheco = Pacheco might be there 5th-round, but I want him and am not waiting. He’s a pure gamble on talent upside.
Existing NFL’ers Hayden Hurst or some of the other guys previously mentioned are options if they fall here.
4.10 Daniel Bellinger
4.11 Romeo Doubs
4.12 Velus Jones Jr.
-----------------------------------
5.1 Pierre Strong Jr.
5.2 Isaiah Likely
5.3 Tyler Goodson
5.4 Jeremy Ruckert
5.5 Sincere McCormick
5.6 Ty Chandler
5.7 Carson Strong
5.8 Jerrion Ealy
5.9 Danny Gray = I was about to click/pick Cole Turner, but then I noticed Danny Gray slid through this late. Gray has a little heat to trade…or my plan could be to hold him, low cost, and see if Deebo gets moved (unlikely). If Deebo is gone from SF, then Gray’s value will really pop.
Some more current NFL names I’d rather take in the 5th-round…
Drew Lock = a shot that he develops into a Josh Allen.
Isaiah McKenzie = if he ends up the starting slot WR, then this could be some FF-gold in 2022.
Damien Williams = Not a huge fan, but if I already have Cordarrelle and drafted Allgeier…
Kenyan Drake = What’s Josh McDaniels gonna do with him? Make him a James White? What if they just dump Josh Jacobs…then it’s Drake-Zamir-Bolden? What if Drake just takes over for Jacobs because of whatever problems Jacobs has?
David Johnson = I think he’ll retire, but he could sign with a team in August and it being a great landing spot and a shock…especially if he’s signed to a team due to some major starting RB getting a camp ACL tear.
5.10 Charlie Kolar
5.11 Kevin Harris
5.12 Abram Smith
