7/20 SUN

 (8:04amET)

 -- The countdown...

11 days until the HOF game.

18 days until the preseason really kicks off.

46 days until Week 1 kicks off on TNF.

-- NBC Headline: Saints signed QB Tyler Shough to a four-year, $10.795 million contract.

From Adam Schefter: At pick No. 40, Shough is the last player selected in the 2025 draft to secure a fully-guaranteed deal.

The contract also includes an annual Roster Bonus structure, which no other non-first round pick has, whereby Shough receives the majority of his compensation each year during the first week of training camp.

RC translation: Tyler Shough will be the Saints starting QB for Week 1...Spencer Rattler is not good, and the Saints know it (but the media doesn’t), and Rattler is not close to starting ahead of Shough.

Shough is ‘Kellen Moore’s guy’. New head coaches love to have ‘their guy’...and that is Shough for Moore. There is one other ‘this is my guy/QB’, non-1st-round-pick QB -- and that is Dillon Gabriel for Kevin Stefanski (but Gabriel will not start Week 1).

I would not be surprised if...

Shough and Dillon led their respective teams in pass attempts for the season.

I would not be surprised if Shough had better numbers than Cam Ward this season (and not due to injury).

I’m not saying this WILL happen, just I would not be surprised if it did.

-- I’m wrapping up my 3-way Mock Draft report...a simultaneous mock redraft from the #4, #8, and #12 spots to get us started for redraft 2025.

That report is set to publish within the next few days. Then I’ll do a bunch of quicker-hitting mocks with various situations for scoring systems throughout the rest of the preseason as the landscape will be ever-changing week-to-week when all the football camp news and injuries, etc., comes at all of us from a firehose.

-- Because it’s a federal law that you have to either talk about or post stuff about the CEO caught cheating at a Coldplay concert news event, here’s my contribution for the day:

 -- QB hierarchy (daily)...

(Same intro daily): I got into a conversation with Ross J. the other day about who were the top QBs in the NFL, and where did Patrick Mahomes rank among them...which got me to thinking about the QB group as a whole, for just 2025 -- if I had just this one season as an NFL head coach and I could have any ONE QB, who would it be? So, I am going to go in team alphabetical order each day and just simply put that day’s QB into the list/rank...so I can focus on just that QB and compare him to the other options. It will be a vertical list, and quickly/also a horizontal one putting them in ‘tiers’.

One QB a day, as we play this out for a month...just for fun.

Today’s add: Philadelphia

Joe Burrow, Justin Herbert

Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, Jalen Hurts

Jared Goff, Lamar Jackson

Matt Stafford, Dak Prescott

Bo Nix, C.J. Stroud, Michael Penix

Jordan Love, Geno Smith, Russell Wilson, J.J. McCarthy, Kyler Murray

Trevor Lawrence, Tua Tagovailoa, Caleb Williams

Joe Flacco, Tyler Shough, Drake Maye, Daniel Jones

Bryce Young, Justin Fields

-- (Same intro daily): I wanted to add another little ranking thing, for fun, before training camps begin -- my NFL team power ratings. Who I think has the best roster/team/coaches/GM...who I think the best TEAM in the league is, right now, for 2025.

We will run this ranking parallel with the QB hierarchy, going in alphabetical order/daily:

(changed up/around a few teams today, an update)

Detroit, Philadelphia, Buffalo

Denver, L.A. Rams, L.A. Chargers, Kansas City, Minnesota, Baltimore

Houston, Green Bay, Cincinnati, Dallas, Atlanta, Arizona

7/19 SAT

 (7:38amET)

-- In a recent Locked On Cowboys podcast appearance, former Cowboys coach Glenn “Stretch” Smith said that coaches with the Cowboys have expressed that (Jaydon) Blue is “borderline lazy” and that the team is not thrilled with his work habits.

Well...this is a game changer.

Is anything positive going to come out about a rookie RB this summer? Seems like every few days it’s more bad news for a rookie RB...either off the field or situational on the field.

I am ‘buying’ this ‘talk’ about Blue. Even when they rush to Jerry and the coaches this week to ask them, and they deny it (which they have to do), I believe this is an issue...an issue that Dallas management may have secretly wanted to get out there to rattle Blue.

One of the worst labels you can get is ‘lazy’/’lack of effort’/’doesn’t love ball’ in the NFL. My opinion: You can work your way out of those labels, but man...usually guys come in lazy tend to stay lazy...because it shows the ingrained character but also some lack of desire to even be in the profession, and it’s hard to fake love for your job over stretches of time...as I’m sure many reading this can attest to. If they finally ‘get it’ and start grinding in 4-5 years, then it’s too FF-late for those in DRDs and redrafts now.

If Blue is not ready for the bright lights, then...

Javonte Williams’ situation improves as the very likely Week 1 starter.

Miles Sanders’ situation for making the team just improved.

And subscribers know who this REALLY benefits. No one will ever question HIS work ethic. I smiled from ear-to-ear when I saw the Blue news...and I own a lot of Blue stock, but I also own a lot of HIS stock with it, on purpose...for just this reason.

-- Sticking to the ‘bad news’ for rookie RBs...

So.

Blue = Lazy.

Judkins = possibly jail bound.

Harvey = pass game back behind JK Dobbins?

Omarion = Najee Harris went to Chargers camp yesterday, so the worst fears for Najee may be no fear.

Tuten = Fumble worries, not getting a push from OTAs.

Be careful...Jeanty, TreVeyon, Kaleb. Think twice before you rob that bank or go out on a Tinder date before training camp.

7/18 FRI

 (7:30amET)

-- Yesterday was ‘defendants in legal cases settle/take a deal’ day...

1) ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports Rashee Rice has been sentenced to “five years probation and 30 days of jail time that can be served during those five years stemming from his role in a multi-car crash in Dallas.”

I’m not going to talk about what the legal punishments should or shouldn’t be...we have a resolution now, and I really only care about the FF and/or betting ramifications.

Rice is surely to get suspended in 2025. How many games? My guess is five games, but he’s a Chief, so probably three games. Could be 8 games...I mean, he is having to go to jail...that’s pretty serious all things considered.

‘Stock Up’ for Xavier Worthy and Jalen Royals...how ‘up’ depends upon how long Rashee is out for...if he is out, I guess we have to throw in there. And also a boost for the Chargers and Broncos (even more) to win the AFC West.

2) (from NBC) Jordan Addison’s agent, Tim Younger, announced that Addison has decided to plead guilty to a “lesser included vehicular offense.”

Addison’s guilty plea is an informal term known as “wet reckless.” Per Cornell Law School, wet reckless varies state to state and is used when an individual charged with a DUI offense pleads down to a reckless driving offense. The plea removes alcohol-related charges while acknowledging that they were initially present. Per Younger, “Addison will pay a standard fine and complete two online courses after which we expect that his probation will be terminated early in six months.”

Maybe Addison gets a game suspension...with what he has pleaded to it’s not really ‘bad’ in the big picture. He has another DUI out there to deal with too, if I’m not mistaken. Might be a game for this one, and 2 games for the other one when it gets ruled upon...or no suspension in 2025 but 1-2 games suspension in 2026 (?) for the second one (once finalized)?

Good FF-news for Addison...good FF-news for JJM, good news for the Vikings -- because there is a chance there is no suspension here for 2025.

-- Injury news updates from yesterday...

Mike Williams got hurt already, before camp really got going, and then decided to retire. A silly signing for LAC all along. He was already pretty much shot.

Anthony Richardson is back throwing, which is good for him...but let’s see if the shoulder starts hurting again when camp and preseason games get going. He is going to have to go all-out in August...he cannot take it easy...unless he does and gets steamrolled by Dan Dimes for the starting job. Everything Richardson does is ‘on the line’ for him to get this job Week 1...to show other teams how he works, if the Colts decide to move him.

-- Please to enjoy Shane Gillis’s opening monologue from the ESPYs the other night. I can’t believe they let him get away with some of the jokes that they did...

7/17 THU

 (7:39amET)

-- Headline: Chargers GM Joe Hortiz said Najee Harris (eye) will likely begin training camp on the non-football injury list.

There’s also reporting that Harris has been receiving treatment from doctors at Stanford.

This eye injury has been made out to be ‘no big deal’, but this is starting to feel like it is a big deal.

His agent says: It’s superficial.

The Chargers say: We haven’t seen the extent of Harris' injury yet.

(from the OC Register reporting) “I’m sure there’s bruising and all that, but we still haven’t seen him,” Hortiz said of Harris. “We’ll get more clarity when he gets in to (be examined by) our doctors. We’re in communication with his doctors. Everything that has been relayed to us has been positive. He’ll be here later (Wednesday afternoon). “Stanford doctors are pretty good, so we feel like he’s in the best hands.”

Najee’s treatment: Not some rest at home...he’s going to Stanford for treatments.

It made me think: Why isn’t Najee with the LAC doctors? How far is Stanford from training camp...seems like that’s a distance to go for a ‘superficial’ injury to the eye.

So, I asked Grok: how far is Stanford university from where the LA Chargers have training camp this year?

Answer: The LA Chargers' training camp in 2025 is primarily held at The Bolt in El Segundo, California, with two additional practices at the University of San Diego. Stanford University is located in Stanford, California, approximately 330 miles north of El Segundo, based on standard driving distance estimates. The distance to the University of San Diego, where the Chargers will also practice on July 22-23, is about 110 miles south of Stanford. These are approximate driving distances and can vary depending on traffic and routes.

Why wouldn’t Najee report to camp or to the team, see the team doctors, hang in the area with his new team he’s trying to impress...and kinda go from there -- if it wasn’t a bigger deal than they are letting on? Maybe I’m overblowing it...but I’m just ‘asking questions’...I’m ‘curious’.

Maybe if you have Najee money you go to the best place you can. But also, if this is just a little issue that will be fine on its own or with some rest and basic meds -- why go all the way to Stanford? Unless you’re a little worried?

Najee’s stock is dropping fast, and Omarion’s is rising...

-- NBC Headline: Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer believes Patriots WR Stefon Diggs is “trending” to play in Week 1.

Wow. Didn’t think this would happen, but when Diggs had such a surprising OTA return (after the boat/suspected drug selfie) I guess he was ready from an ACL tear in late October 2024/surgery in November 2024.

What used to kill careers (ACL tears)...is now 30+ year old WRs are back at OTAs 7-8 months later. What a time we live in.

This can only help Drake Maye and the Patriots...and may help Kyle Williams not get such oppressive coverage, but it may be more FF ‘bad’ for him because it may mean Kyle will not be a Week 1 starter now. He’ll be heavily rotated if not starter, but I want ‘starter’ Kyle Williams ASAP.

Diggs-Hollins-Douglas Week 1 potentially...with Kyle trying to crack it in August, or quickly into the season.

Eventually, Kyle Williams will be the Patriots WR you want. When is ‘eventually’?

Eventually.

-- Arch Manning got the recent Steve Spurrier critique thrown in his face at the SEC media days. And Arch handled it like an absolute pro.

This (article below) is the way you want to see a famous last name handle himself under some ‘friendly fire’/from a media loving/craving controversy.

Famous last name QB Shedeur Sanders should take note, but he’s likely out spending money he doesn’t have on people who don’t care about him beyond his wallet and driving 150 MPH, in one of his 7 luxury vehicles, in a local school zone at one of his 3-4 hours/condos he has...

7/16 WED

 (8:10amET)

-- So, the Jets spent some money yesterday...giving big contract extensions to Garrett Wilson and Sauce Gardner.

Personally, I would not have extended Wilson...I would have traded him. There are too many talented WRs flooding the NFL now, and it should cause a supply & demand deflation in the WR market...and any GM with half-a-brain should sense that market shift. There’s like 5-10 Garrett Wilson’s entering the league each year now. 10 years ago, there might have been 1 Garrett Wilson hitting the league each draft...maybe.

Plus, I just don’t think Garrett Wilson is all that great/special...nor is he a personality that I’d like to invest in for my ‘culture’. For all those reasons, and the fact that by the time the Jets get good, if they do, it will be 2-3 years from now...so what good is it to spend up on a whiny WR now?

However, I definitely would have locked up Sauce Gardner. He is way more valuable in the big picture of the NFL. Gardner is in the argument for the top 1-5 best CBs in the league. Wilson is not in/near the top 10 at his position...yet they paid Wilson more than Gardner. Insane.

But the Jets are not voted one of the worst franchises to work for in the NFL for nothing...they are not the failures that they have been without ‘effort’...and ‘effort’ being their ownership on down has sucked out loud.

Nine straight losing record seasons.

They have finished in last place in the division in six of their last 9 seasons.

They last won the division in 2002.

They have won their division twice in the past 54 years.

They last won a playoff game in 2010.

The Jets had to sign both of these guys because this team will not attract any real free agents -- it’s a bad state to live in tax-wise/cost wise and the weather is unappealing at home...and, again, they are constantly voted at the bottom of the league, by the players, as a terrible organization to work for. They gotta buy loyalty...or so they hope.

Another not-winning-the-division season is coming for NYJ. Probably another last place finish. And when they realize their Justin Fields mistake -- they’ll be searching and groping around for a new QB savior, again. And I’m not sure Aaron Glenn is who you want influencing your young QB...and veteran QBs aren’t going there unless they have nowhere else to go.

I wonder if ‘Fireman Ed’ ever questions his life choices? Probably not. Probably not a deep thinker. Probably best for him not to think. If my whole existence was centered around leading the fans at a football game to spell four letter words...wow...just wow. If the team was great, then maybe that’s something...but the Jets? Maybe take up Pickleball or something else to use your remaining years on?

-- Rookie 1st-round draft pick of the Bengals, Shemar Stewart, is reportedly trying to go back to Texas A&M. Only the Bengals can get themselves into this type of situation. Here’s an article with all the quick details on what Stewart is doing and what his legal rights vs. hopes are.

https://sports.yahoo.com/article/bengals-shemar-stewart-takes-unprecedented-152626891.html

If Stewart skips 2025, whatever that means, then it appears he is still assigned to Cincy in 2026. He really cannot gain anything by all this -- except maybe trying to force his way out of Cincinnati. And I think the Bengals would not trade him out of spite, so this impasse rages on.

It was already a dumb pick in the 1st-round, from the player/position standpoint...now it looks even dumber. Arguably the best OL in the draft went in the next pick (Grey Zabel), but what do the Bengals want with great offensive line help?

The Bengals and the Browns... The NFL should pass a law to ban having teams in the state of Ohio.

7/15 TUE

 (7:30amET)

-- The latest on Quinshon Judkins, from NBC and from Tom Pelisssero.

Arresting officer Steven Pohorence reported that the victim of Judkins’ alleged assault reported the incident the day after it occurred, alleging Judkins “punched her in the mouth/chin area with a closed fist” while adding he later struck her in the arm and thigh. The victim also showed pictures of her chin/lip area, with officer Pohorence noting in the report “the bruising was clearly evident.” Bruises could also be found on her arm and thigh. This situation is far from resolved and could have a direct impact on Judkins’ availability for training camp as he remains unsigned at this time.

This is getting very serious/troubling.

I don’t think the Browns will cut Judkins. What they should do is fire their entire awful, league-worst-for-years management team, but they won’t...nor will they cut Judkins. They probably delight in the fact that they have leverage over the currently unsigned RB...and they do. They will likely sign him closer to training camp start when the news dies down some and then let the league enact a six or more game suspension.

Don’t count on the Browns to step in and do anything extra above the NFL’s penalty...they didn’t do anything extra with Deshaun Watson, nor with rookie Michael Hall last year...so they won’t with Judkins. The fans and media will feign concern for a few days, but the Browns know this will all blow over with the excitement of the new season and onward with the awful running of the team the Browns can continue as-is.

This situation obviously puts Jerome Ford in a nice spot for FF purposes...and it drives Dylan Sampson’s current and future value higher. If Sampson gets a real shot at work for 5-6+ games this season and gets more time in training camp -- the numbnuts in Cleveland may actually see Sampson is a better prospect than Judkins.

The 2025 Judkins redraft ADP is starting to leak faster and faster based on the latest details.

We also don’t know if there is a wrinkle in this situation that none of us knows about and will result in charges being dropped and there is no impact...or the case gets pushed down the road for two years, like Rashee Rice.

-- Jordan Addison is having his DUI trial set for today. He has pleaded not guilty. If he is found guilty, he could face a (projected) 3-game suspension different experts are saying. He also has a second DUI out there to bring more pressure to his case and suspension possibilities down the road.

More information, and possible outcome of the case (assumed) should be out today, and we’ll discuss it tomorrow.

-- Sports Injury Central (SIC) website had this to say (below) about Christian McCaffrey in a free release email they sent to their mailing list members:

It’s Dr. David Chao’s website (a respected sports doctor, long-time NFL team doctor, now specializes in NFL injury reports...if you don’t know him)

The note: Dr. David Chao isn’t concerned about Christian McCaffrey’s injury history going into 2025. While some fantasy players may be hesitant because of past calf and Achilles issues, Chao believes those injuries are not recurring and says CMC is healthy. He compares McCaffrey to Saquon Barkley, who struggled after his ACL tear but bounced back strong the next season. With Kyle Shanahan’s usage and McCaffrey’s PPR upside, he remains a top fantasy option.

I keep talking about this situation because the CMC FF 2025 proposition is so fascinating...he’s a ‘do not touch’ for many...he’s a ‘bargain of 2025 redraft’ for others. I’m thinking -- why draft CMC highly with the risk/all the other options? But the news has been so positive lately that it is sucking more-and-more believers in, and starting to drive CMC’s ADP higher.

-- An NBC headline yesterday by way of The Athletic: The Athletic’s Vic Tafur believes Jacob Cowing in 2025 “could take a lot of the departed Deebo Samuel’s gadget plays.”

I have a short reaction answer to that: No.

Not likely.

Deebo led all WRs in carries with 42 last season...no way Cowing is getting 42 carries at 168-175 pounds soaking wet. Cowing may get a few jet sweeps, as could Ricky Pearsall (who is the more likely to take carries of a ball)...but painting Cowing as just stepping in to the Deebo-like run-role, to me, is ‘no way’. It’s apples and oranges on Cowing and Deebo skillsets.

-- My key REWIND report is coming out today...a deeper look at Jameson Williams and the changes to the Lions offense upcoming in 2025. It’s an important report for 2025 for various reasons that will be evident this week and next.

Today’s add: Minnesota

Joe Burrow, Justin Herbert

Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen

Lamar Jackson

Jared Goff, Matt Stafford, Dak Prescott

Bo Nix, C.J. Stroud, Michael Penix

Jordan Love, Geno Smith, J.J. McCarthy, Kyler Murray

Trevor Lawrence, Tua Tagovailoa, Caleb Williams

Joe Flacco, Daniel Jones

Bryce Young

-- (Same intro daily): I wanted to add another little ranking thing, for fun, before training camps begin -- my NFL team power ratings. Who I think has the best roster/team/coaches/GM...who I think the best TEAM in the league is, right now, for 2025.

We will run this ranking parallel with the QB hierarchy, going in alphabetical order/daily:

Buffalo, Detroit

LA Chargers, Denver, Baltimore, L.A. Rams, Kansas City, Minnesota

Houston, Green Bay, Cincinnati, Dallas, Atlanta, Arizona

Carolina, Miami, Jacksonville, Las Vegas, Indianapolis, Chicago

Cleveland

7/14 MON

 (7:25amET)

-- The latest on Quinshon Judkins, from NBC: Details around Judkins’ arrest continue to emerge. On Sunday, Sergeant David Soika of the Fort Lauderdale Police Department Media Relations Unit shared that upon arriving at the scene where the reported crime took place, officers determined after speaking to the victim that a battery occurred, which led to the arrest of Judkins soon after. The rookie second-rounder remained in police custody overnight and is scheduled to have an initial hearing on Sunday.

Ok, this is starting to look a little more serious. Still, we have a-ways to go...but Judkins is taking hits to his ADP already this weekend.

It’s weird how this rookie RB class is going...

Omarion Hampton taking small hits/sliding a bit on ‘Najee exists’ fears.

RJ Harvey was flying high, and then they cut his legs out with JK Dobbins signing.

Judkins was rising in the face of all of this, but if Judkins gets into serious trouble...down he’ll go.

The RB class is fading before they even hit the field. It makes Ashton Jeanty even more valuable...and TreVeyon Henderson continues to get more consensus love...all because this RB class is crumbling week-by-week this summer.

I think if Judkins did something bad and thus got suspended for like 6 games -- Kaleb Johnson is going to rise in the Dynasty Rookie Draft rankings, among the consensus, surpassing Judkins in ADP...as the mainstream tries to find RBs to love.

The era of supply & demand and RBBC situations is going to continue to make RBs less and less valuable in Dynasty because you can only trust them for ‘right now’/a year at a time.

A main carry RB is worth their weight in gold ‘right now’, but you don’t know if they will be main carry a year from now/who the team adds in the draft, etc.

-- Jauan Jennings is going for a contract extension...

https://ninernoise.com/jauan-jennings-extension-drama-brewing-49ers-fans-worry

It makes sense because JJ has some leverage right now because Brandon Aiyuk is hurt, likely to miss 1-2 months of the season...and is out of favor in SF...and Ricky Pearsall is promising but always hurt...Jennings is the SF #1 WR for 2025 -- but he is paid like a chump. He is due some money.

I don’t think it will become a thing, or he’ll miss any time, etc. Jennings likely gets a 1-year deal for $10-15M+, which allows him to have a big season and go for big bucks in 2026. But SF may respect him enough to go like 3-years, $50M or something like it...some sign of respect.

He’ll get a raise, we’ll see how much and how long likely in the next 2-4 weeks. The contract SF gives him will say a lot about what SF thinks about him overall...and will impact what we think about him some more for FF 2025.
