2021 Devy Preview Scouting Series (for 2022): CB Sevyn Banks, Ohio State

*Devy (for 2022 prospects) Preview scouting = scouting 1-2+ key game tapes, looking at output trends/basic analytics, and some minor background research. Not a full blown, deep dive scouting report. We’ll continue to scout these players ahead of the college all-star games, the Combine and post-Combine for a full reporting ahead of their NFL Draft.

I (RC) conducted my scouting as Ross Jacobs did his, we then exchanged our reports without knowing what the other was thinking/seeing. Then we briefly discussed our scouting in a chat (posted below the two scouting takes). *Please forgive typos on the chat transcript.

*Devy Rankings/Cheat Sheet: it’s the final tab/report on the Dynasty Rookie+Devy sheet.

CB Sevyn Banks, Ohio State (Scouting Grade: C-) = by R.C. Fischer

6’1”/200, 2020: 23 tackles, 0.5 TFLs, 0 INTs, 6 PDs, 0 FF (8 games). Projected: 4.55+ 40-time, 7.1+ three-cone.

Didn’t see much cover talent here. NFL body, more of a free safety body…but a poor tackler, so a safety transition is not totally obvious. He has the build and body and movement of an NFL roster-able CB, but I didn’t see any ‘wow’ factor from my brief watch/study.

CB Sevyn Banks, Ohio St (Scouting Grade: C)

6'0”/200, 2020: 23 tackles, 6 passes defended, 0 INT, 0 FF (8g), Projected: 4.45 40-time, 6.9 3-cone

Banks seems like a well-coached, polished corner, but I'm not seeing any real playmaking ability. Seems like he's always in position but just doesn't come down with the ball or even break up the pass very often. Part of it is he's just an ok athlete. He has a thicker build with average speed and pretty good tackling ability, almost looks like a safety which is probably a better position for him in the NFL. At corner he's just average, but he might be a B safety.

Ross: So we're in lock-step on Banks.

RC: Least interesting OSU CB prospect in years.

Ross: For sure. He just doesn't DO anything. He drops back and he's usually in the right place, but the WR catches the ball way too often.

RC: So, to wrap up on Banks...I'm in my hotel, watching NFL Network for the first time in forever and a grown human person paid to discuss football proudly proclaims Jerry Jeudy is his break out star for 2021...then proceeds to tell us all about his drops problem and the number of drops he had and how he must have been scared as a rookie, he doesn't know what happened in 2020...he just knows Jeudy will want to be better -- so that was his case for Jeudy in a nutshell.

Ross: Scintillating.

RC: Really got me fired up for Jeudy with that logic.

Ross: And where, pray tell, is he going to get these numbers to break out? Because there won't be a ton of volume with either Bridgewater or Lock and Sutton is easily the #1...

RC: To wrap it up...Banks is as boring a prospect as all NFL Network analysts saying lots of words that mean nothing.

Ross: As boring as a Cynthia Frelund article.

RC: NFL Network question: What NFL non-playoff team 2020 will be one in 2021...

Ross: Bet they said Dallas.

RC: New England one...Cynthia is on the panel...can’t wait for 'what her analytics' say

Ross: I can't say much there considering they are one of my bets.

RC: Cynthia hasnt weighed in yet

RC: She just agrees with everything on NE via Terrell Davis

RC: James Palmer = SF

RC: I am praying Cynthia goes Miami

Ross: "My analytics say that Belichick has had only one season below 10 wins since 2003 so that suggests that last year was an aberration"

RC: I love to hate the NFL Network.

RC: Honestly, I think she said that about NE...

Ross: Oh lord I just made that up...

RC: Terrell Davis..."NE believes in Cam or they wouldn't have re-signed him". No one said back...why did they draft Mac Jones then? Why one-year deals for Cam?

RC: Here she comes...!!!

RC: Cynthia says Arizona!!!

Ross: You can't see it but I'm making a disgusted face right now.

RC: Good logic from her...they did lots of things for situations this offseason (her words)

Ross: Huh??

RC: Plus..."They will want to dial it up with Kyler Murray this year"

RC: Hard hitting analysis

RC: Oh, and she liked Budda Baker

Ross: You can't be serious. So they were holding back the last two years because they didn't REALLY want to score points?

Ross: They signed AJ Green ON PURPOSE. That's all I need to know.

RC: Hey...they did LOTS of things this offseason -- Cynthia said it so believe it.

Ross: She ostensibly has a degree right? A data science degree or computer engineering or something. How in the world is such a smart person so stupid?

RC: Oh, for ‘who will win the NFC East’ Cynthia picked Washington when all the others picked  NYG and Dallas. She's good. My bad.

RC: She's like a robot programmed with NFL cliches and Air Yards discussions

Ross: Look there's nothing wrong with any of her picks or anyone else's...provided they back it up with clear and consistent logic. That's where I have a problem.

RC: I loathe anything where anyone mentions Air Yards as their logic

Ross: That makes sense. It's like a computer. Crap input, crap output.

RC: Who were we talking about? Banks...probably becomes a free safety but he is not interested in tackling, so...

Ross: I think so. I don't know. Our NFL Network bashing was much more interesting.

RC: That's why I went there.

Ross: He has a cool name, Seven spelled with a Y so he'll go high in the draft.

RC: He can't even spell his own name right...low wonderlic alert

Ross: His name is his Wonderlic score.

RC: drop the mic on that one, end of Banks chat. I cannot top that.
